Gable House

Oh, what charm, what character !

Gable House was willed to me over 30 years ago by my mother Olivia L. Strachan (nee Deveaux ).Interestingly, it was willed to her by her aunt and my grand aunt Mrs Olivia Louise Laing nee Deveaux ; who herself received it from an aunt or cousin, a Mrs Caroline Deveaux.

If I recall correctly the story, my relative Ms Caroline Deveaux purchased the property Circa 1800.Gable House is the second structure to have been erected on this site . Gable house is super imposed on the foundation of a previous 2 story-house whic , legend has it, was torched by a young lawyer ( no relative of mine)who aborted the exercise to orchestrate the tragic demise of an a increasingly cumbersome invalid mother . He rescued his mother from the burning building. If one were you look under the floor of the present building, you can still see cinders from the old fire.

It is not known, exactly how old is the present building. However, an approximation places it well over 120 years (any feed-back from anyone who can shed more light would be appreciated).

The name Gable House describes the architectural style in which a pointed part at the top of an outside wall, lies between 2 sloping roofs .

So, there you have it GABLE HOUSE. No, no connection with the actor Clarke Gable as numerous tourist inquire upon seeing the name . It is a popular site with passing tourist ; it is not an uncommon occurrence to walk outside and have your picture taken.

Once, when attempting to exit the building, I interrupted a professional photo shoot, replete with mounted cameras, a squadron of make-up and hair artists , and of course the model. She was modelling a sweater top, which was the same bright pink colour as the trim on Gable House .Of course, she was also wearing a white skirt ,I may hasten to add.

I am so proud to be the owner of such an beautiful old building in Nassau and have ensured that I maintain the personality and character of its history. I hope to be able to offer my Holistic Beauty Services from the property for many years to come.
